THE EIGHTH

Stasys Šimkus‘ Choir Competition took place on the 11th – 12th November, 1989, in the concert hall of Klaipėda Conservatoire. 16 choirs from Tallinn, Vilnius, Kaunas, Alytus, Marijampolė, Telšiai and Klaipėda took part in this competition. The choirs competed in three groups: mixed (eight choirs), female (three choirs), and male (four choirs). The names of the laureates of the 8th S. Šimkus Choir Competition were awarded to the mixed choir “Gilija” from Klaipėda (leader Remigijus Songaila), the female chamber choir from Kaunas (leader J. Masevičius), and the male choir “Vytis” from Vilnius (leader Tadas Šumskas). The mixed choir “Šilelis” of the Culture House of Kaunas (leader E. Kaniauskas) and the girls chamber choir from Kaunas (leader J. Masevičius) were awarded special prizes (founded by S. Šimkus‘ Higher Music School) for the best performance of S. Šimkus’ songs. The mixed choir “Leliumai” from Kaunas (leader Albinas Petrauskas) and the girls’ chamber choir from Kaunas were awarded prizes for the best performed contemporary choir pieces. These two choirs were also granted the prizes for the best programmes performed in the competition. According to the Jury’s special decision, the diploma was awarded to the mixed youth choir from Tallinn.
